Notes From Nashville: Nov. 6, 2023
shows in ohio and wv this week / looking back & looking ahead
Lately
On the micro level, things are pretty mellow here at home in East Nashville. We’ve been wallowing in some particularly gorgeous weather, attending grandkids’ soccer games and Halloween festivities, doing some decluttering around the house, and getting ourselves prepared for this week’s TOUR.
Our first stop on this outing will be Wednesday in Yellow Springs, Ohio, where we’ll play the Foundry Theater at Antioch College. Then over to Columbus, where we’ll get to experience a new version of our old favorite, Natalie’s. From there it’s off to The G.A.R. Hall in Peninsula—we’ll be excited to check out the renovations to that wonderful historic building. From there we’ll head down to Charleston, West Virginia, to be part of the FOOTMAD concert series at the WV Culture Center.
If you’ve got friends in any of those areas, we hope you’ll point them our way!
Following Up
Thanks to everyone who reached out about our brief appearance in Killers of the Flower Moon! It’s an honor to be a teeny part of telling that story—and it’s also pretty neat to be on an official soundtrack album. (We still haven’t seen the movie, though!)
Listening
We both think the new Alice Gerrard album is something special.
Here’s a thrilling bit of live singing from the Louvin Brothers.
Looking Back
Check out this great old photo KK dug up recently! That’s him playing mandolin with John Van on guitar and Roger Sprung on banjo. (This was at some sort of small music festival on the campus of Yale in 1967.) A side note: John Van’s guitar (the 1962 D-28 he’s playing here) is the one I play now. And Kieran would also like you to know that the ’30s F-4 mandolin in this photo “was sold in mid-’70s Los Angeles for food and shelter during a career low point”. So there’s some historical background for ya.
Looking Ahead
Our midwestern winter adventure has a shape now!
Jan. 26: Saint Louis, MO • The Focal Point
Jan. 27: Champaign, IL • Techline Studio
Jan. 28: Berwyn, IL • FitzGerald’s
Have a venue that you’d like us to play in 2024? Drop us a line!
A Request
If you have friends you think would enjoy our music or our missives, please forward this note along. It’s a noisy world, and we’d just like to find the people who may want to come to our shows or buy a CD or listen to some tunes online. It all helps!
Thanks so much for reading.
Till soon —
