Notes From the Cabin: July 21, 2023
family visit / shows in NY & ME / proof that we're in a movie / merganser freakout
Lately
We have been bustling our butts off in preparation for a family visit. The bunkhouse studio has been broken down and stowed away, and that space is now organized to accommodate a daughter, son-in-law, and two grandkids. It has been years since we had more than a solo cabin visitor, so this crew’s trip up from Nashville proved great motivation to freshen up the whole scene. Docks have been repaired, bedding sorted, furniture rearranged, lightbulbs replaced, spiders relocated, and The Little Cabin Home On The Hill (aka “the jakes”) got a scrubdown. The revels will commence this evening!
Other recent excitement around here: RG got to handle a hummingbird (they’re usually really good at finding their way out of the house, but this one got confused and didn’t seem to mind getting scooped up and carried outside); KK got a new drill (see the above note about docks being repaired).
Speaking of family: keen-eyed Kane offspring spotted the tops of our heads in the new trailer for Killers of The Flower Moon. Here’s a screenshot:
Upcoming Giggage
Aug 5: Putnam Valley, NY / Tompkins Corners Cultural Center
Sep 10: Berwich, ME / Hackmatack Playhouse (ticket link will be up soon)
And in between those two dates, RG will be jetting off to Europe for a run of shows with Joachim Cooder. More info on that tour here.
Heads Up
Dick Connette’s new album Yet and Still (under the project name Too Sad For The Public) is coming out next Friday! We’re on it, but that’s not why you should be interested—it’s a genuinely cool document of Dick’s unique musical vision. Listen/preorder here.

As mentioned, the hummingbirds are making themselves very much at home. (Their battles at the feeder are downright epic.) The loons have been hollering their loony little heads off at night, which never stops being thrilling. Not sure where the bald eagles are hanging out at the moment, but it’s not in our neighborhood—but we hope one will show up to impress the grandkids.
Here’s what happens when you spook a passel of merganser babies:
That’s a wrap for now, we have to finish our nesting activities in advance of the family arrival.
Till soon —
